Trongsa

paro popular destination in bhutan

Overview

Trongsa holds a singular place in Bhutanese history as the traditional seat of power for the Penlops (Governors) who eventually became the Kings of Bhutan. The Trongsa Dzong, built in 1648, is a massive architectural marvel that clings to a mountain spur above the Mangde Chhu river. Because the only trail connecting East and West Bhutan passed directly through the dzong’s gates, the Penlop of Trongsa held absolute control over the nation's trade and movement for centuries.

Overlooking the fortress is the Ta Dzong, a former watchtower built in 1652 that now serves as a world-class museum dedicated to the Wangchuck Dynasty. The town itself is a charming cluster of traditional buildings that offer breathtaking views of the deep gorge below. A visit here provides a profound look at the strategic military history and the royal heritage that unified the Dragon Kingdom.
