Bumthang Airport

Overview

Opened in 2011 to boost tourism in central Bhutan, the Bumthang Airport at Bathpalathang represents the country's efforts to modernize while respecting its rugged geography. Before its construction, reaching the spiritual heartland of Bumthang required a grueling two-day drive from Thimphu. The airport has significantly shortened this journey, allowing visitors to spend more time exploring the ancient temples of the region.

The airport is relatively small and operates under strict weather visual rules, meaning flights usually take place in the clear morning hours. The terminal building is designed in traditional Bhutanese architectural style, ensuring that the very first thing travelers see upon landing is a reflection of the nation's aesthetic heritage. It serves as a vital artery for both high-end tourism and local logistics.
