Authentic Bhutanese Craft Bazaar

Overview

The Authentic Bhutanese Craft Bazaar was established under the patronage of the Department of Cottage and Small Industry to provide a platform for local artisans to sell their work directly to visitors. Extending over half a kilometer along Thimphu’s main thoroughfare, the bazaar consists of nearly 80 stalls built in traditional style using bamboo and thatch. 

Historically, Bhutanese crafts were produced for functional or spiritual use within the community; this bazaar represents the modern transition of these skills into a sustainable local economy. Here, you can find everything from hand-woven "Yathra" wool from Bumthang and intricate "Kushutara" silk to bamboo baskets, religious masks, and handmade paper. Walking through the bazaar offers a sensory overview of the "Zorig Chusum" (the 13 Traditional Arts) in a single, accessible location.
