Wangdue Phodrang Dzong

paro popular destination in bhutan

Overview

Founded in 1638, the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong was the third fortress built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. According to legend, the Zhabdrung was searching for a site for a dzong to unify the southern regions when he saw four ravens flying in four different directions, which he took as an auspicious sign to build on the ridge. For centuries, it served as a critical administrative and defensive hub, controlling the bridge over the Punatsang Chhu.

In 2012, the original structure was tragically destroyed by a massive fire, but the nation rallied to rebuild it using traditional techniques. The reconstruction project has become a live museum of Bhutanese craftsmanship, with master carpenters and masons working to recreate the intricate woodwork and stone masonry. The dzong is famous for the annual Wangdue Phodrang Tshechu, where the "Dance of the Ox" is a highlight for the local community and visitors alike.
