For decades, Paro was the only international airport in Bhutan, situated at an altitude of 2,235 meters. Because the surrounding mountains are so high and the valley so narrow, flights are only permitted under visual flight rules during daylight hours. This requires pilots to perform a series of precise maneuvers, making the arrival one of the most memorable parts of any traveler's journey.

The airport terminal is a stunning example of traditional Bhutanese architecture, featuring sloping roofs, carved woodwork, and hand-painted motifs.
